The Spirited Thoroughbred
Katz
A 3-year-old Thoroughbred gelding with polo breeding, a tendon injury, a lot of personality, and a permanent home at Hidden Bee Farm.
Katz
Katz was bred for polo — fast, athletic, and with a personality that makes sure you know he’s in the room. A minor tendon injury and a temperament that doesn’t exactly follow directions took him off the polo field, and honestly, we think that worked out just fine.
He’s three years old, which in horse terms means he’s basically a teenager with a lot of energy and opinions. He runs the fields like he owns them, jumps things he probably shouldn’t, and has decided he’s the most important animal on the property. The other animals have mixed feelings about this.
Katz can still be ridden, and he’s sharp — Thoroughbreds don’t lose their intelligence just because the original plan changed. What he has here is something better than a polo field: space to just be a horse, without the pressure of performance or the risk of ending up somewhere that doesn’t care about him.
“He came in with a lot of fire. We weren’t looking to put it out — just give it somewhere good to go.”

Thoroughbreds are one of the most athletic horse breeds in the world, developed in 17th and 18th century England specifically for speed and endurance. They’re the breed behind most modern racing, but their athleticism translates to polo, eventing, show jumping, and trail riding just as well.
They’re also sensitive and intelligent — which means they pick up on everything around them, for better or worse. A Thoroughbred in the right environment is a remarkable animal. One in the wrong situation can struggle. The difference is almost always about the people around them and the care they receive.
Speed and Athleticism
Thoroughbreds are built for speed. They have lean, muscular frames, long legs, and deep chests that give them the lung capacity for serious endurance. Top racing Thoroughbreds can reach 40–45 mph.
Intelligence and Sensitivity
Thoroughbreds are smart and they know it. They respond to their environment, to the people around them, and to routine. They can be spirited, but with consistent handling they’re capable and engaged partners.
Off-Track Thoroughbreds
Many Thoroughbreds like Katz end up in rescue or retirement situations after racing, polo, or breeding careers end. With proper transition and care, they often go on to long, healthy second lives.
Care Needs
Thoroughbreds are typically lighter-bodied and can need more calories than stockier breeds, especially younger horses still developing. Regular farrier care, turnout, and mental stimulation all matter for this breed.
